WHAT YOU GET:

This item is for the original media, and includes only the media (ie. CD, floppy ...) UNLESS specifically stated above and/or in the title. If more than just the media is included, it will state which items are (ie. box, manual, etc ). Items that come in a sleeve refer to a generic CD sleeve (typically white) and will be sent with shipping protection to avoid damage during transit. If available, we will also send the front and/or back CD inserts if in stock. If these are important to you, please message us to verify we have them available to send. Please do not assume items are included other than what's stated. Again, ask questions PRIOR to purchasing if you have any concerns.

IMAGES:

All images/pictures are stock photos and are for reference only, mainly to show the type of game you will be getting. Please read "WHAT YOU GET" for what is included with the media. Screenshots may vary based on your own computer system, video card, monitor, etc.

COMPATIBILITY:

Computers are like people, each one is different. Unlike console games, a computer game may install and work flawlessly on one system but may need adjustments on another. This is due to a variety of factors, mainly the OS platform running, video card you have, drivers, protection software installed, etc. Many times manufacturers release updates to games to fix bugs and add enhancements. We would be happy to help get the game going on your computer, but ultimately compatibility issues are the responsibility of the buyer. We suggest going to Google and searching for the name of the game along with the words "system requirements" to determine if your system is suitable. Ultimately, we are not responsible for software compatibility problems or publisher's errors.

PLATFORM:

Stated within the auction is what platform the game will work on (ie. Windows, Mac, Linux...) This is a generic statement and specific platform versions (ie. XP, Vista...) will have to be researched by the buyer. Games that came out PRIOR to XP or higher will not specifically state they will work on that release, but only because they came out before those versions were made. Many, if not most, will work on XP or higher with a few quick adjustments. We provide instructions with all items purchased on how to do this adjustment using the Program Compatibility Wizard. If we find out that an item will definately not work on a specific version, we will state it. For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program if the Program Compatibility Wizard does not work.

64-Bit Windows OS Systems:
For 64-bit Operating Systems, older games most likely will NOT work due to 64-bit systems not being able to run 16-bit programming code (most games prior to 2000). For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program.

Macintosh Systems:
For Macintosh programs, most older games will need to be run in Classic Environment if you have a MAC OS X 10.0 - 10.4 version. Please research Google on how to do this, or send us a message for information prior to purchasing. If your MAC OS system doesn't support Classic Environment (ie. MAC OS X 10.5 or Higher OR Intel Macs), you will have to try running it using the free program called SheepShaver, but compatibility is not ensured. Please research prior to purchasing or ask questions.

MEDIA FORMAT:

Please verify you have the required hardware in order to use the specified media (ie. CD, DVD, floppy drives, etc.) If the item comes as a floppy disc, make sure you have either the needed 3.5" floppy drive or the bigger and older 5.25" floppy drive.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SMOOTH PURCHASE:

SHIPPING:

We typically ship all items out within 1-2 business days after payment is received. In regards to the stated shipping and handling, remember that these costs include more than just postage.

International buyers please email/chat with us to determine if you are eligible for shipping of a specific product. If you are, then international buyers not shipping to an address within the U.S. can expect their orders to take anywhere from 5 days to 4 weeks to be received, depending on how fast/well USPS is moving. Additionally, international orders typically have to go through governmental customs, which can delay the arrival process. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying. Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges.

Thomas Newman, 2013, Disney
31 tracks, 45.55

Christmas comes early, courtesy of Thomas Newman’s “twinkly” and “heartwarming” score for “Saving Mr. Banks”.

Review by Pete Simons

What is it?

“Saving Mr Banks” sees writer Travers (Emma Thompson) reminiscing her troubled childhood whilst meeting Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) during the production of the film adaptation of her book “Mary Poppins”. Directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”, “The Alamo”) the film is received positively by critics and audiences alike; and is being described as “twinkly” and “heartwarming”. Those two words are equally apt for Thomas Newman’s original score.

What does it sound like?

Let me first note that there are two albums in circulation. A single CD and a 2-CD special edition. This review is based on the single CD, which opens with Colin Farrell’s performance of “Chim Chim Cher-ee”. Don’t worry… he doesn’t actually sing, rather he turns the lyrics in to a little story (or poem). It is accompanied by a piano, the recording of which is made to sound old and faded. Onto Newman’s score then with his theme for “Travers Goff”. Whilst it opens with solemn strings, it soon turns in to a foot-thumpingly jaunty cue for a combo of piano, guitar, marimba and bells. Part of it is performed in a 7/8 rhythm; another presents a simple but recognisable four-note hook – two up, two down. Goff’s music returns a few times (e.g. in “Beverly Hills Hotel” and “Ginty My Love” ). “Walking Bus” continues with a jumpy melody for piano augmented by string stabs. Bells and a distant flute are also present. We are instantly in familiar and much-loved Thomas Newman territory – and it is oh so lovely.

Newman’s cues are typically short, only two make it past the 3 minutes mark. The score is firmly rooted in Newman’s typical style and orchestrations. You’ll find plenty of plucked violins, guitars, bells and vaguely Indian-sounding instruments. It’s an energetic album, with a positive vibe; and even the shortest of cues while have you tapping along. Unfortunately, the score does get interrupted by a handful of songs and – worse – excerpts from the motion picture itself. The excerpts are nothing more but brief quotes, like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”! It adds nothing to the album, other than grievance.

Highlights include “Uncle Albert”, which makes everything worth while. After an almost regal opening for woodwings, a most heartwarming theme for strings emerges. It’s a joyous and loving piece. Its simplicity only adding to its childlike charm. It’s lovingly repeated in tracks like “Celtic Soul”, “To My Mother”, “Westerly Weather” and ultimately the end title cue.

“Mr Disney” may be extremely short, it is very lively with a wild-west energy.  “Laying Eggs” is the gentlest of cues for slow strings and glockenspiel, like only Newman can write them. “Split Splot” offers more twinkly sounds, whilst “Forgiveness” sees an oboe going solo before strings and guitar make a quiet appearance. “The Magic Kingdom” treats us to exciting strings and zither writing (I’m guessing it’s a zither). It’s fast-paced and uplifting. Surprisingly it also features a synthesised brass sound, but even more surprisingly… it works! The aforementioned “Ginty My Love” and “Saving Mr. Banks (End Title)” close the album, repeating the scores main themes. They are glorious tracks.

Is it any good?

I have to say that nothing on this album will surprise anyone. It is Thomas Newman through and through. Technically it is as well written as anything he’s ever done and the recording is crystal clear, letting you hear and enjoy every tiny little sound. It is a wonderful amalgamation of Newman’s gentle orchestral writing and his quirky orchestrations. I found it reminded me of… well, many Newman scores, but “The Green Mile” and “Lemony Snicket” in particular. Those wanting it to reach the soaring heights of “The Shawshank Redemption” or “Meet Joe Black” may have to wait a little longer though. The short cues and various interruptions are a little bit of a shame. Having said that… “Saving Mr Banks” is a totally loveable score, without ever getting overly sentimental. It makes your heart smile.

SAVING MR. BANKS Blu-ray Review

By Jackson Jackson

ShareTweetEmail

Jackson's SAVING MR. BANKS Blu-ray review takes a look at the live-action Disney film starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers.

Sometimes a movie that screams Academy Award-pedigree just doesn’t score the nominations--let alone the rewards.  Such was the case in 2013 for Saving Mr. Banks, which landed numerous critics’ award nominations but tallied only one Oscar nom (for Best Original Score).  Perhaps that says more about the strength of the then seemingly wide-open Oscar field than the film itself, since Saving Mr. Banks is a thoroughly delightful film.  Hit the jump for my Saving Mr. Banks Blu-ray review.

Saving Mr. Banks follows Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to P.L. Travers’s Mary PoppinsEmma Thompson plays author Travers, whose declining financial situation forces her finally to consider Walt Disney’s (Tom Hanks) offer after many years of turning him down.  Travers flies to Los Angeles, where she works with--or, more often than not, vetoes the work of--screenwriter Don DaGradi (Bradley Whitford) and songwriters Richard & Robert Sherman (Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak, respectively).  Interspersed with this story is the flashback story of Travers’s youth in Australia, focused on her relationship with her father, Travers Goff (Colin Farrell).  Bit by bit her barriers break down, until she learns that despite her adamant objections, Disney plans to include animation in the movie.  Travers returns to London, where Disney tracks her down, having figured out the true nature of Travers’ relationship with her father and how that informs her reluctance to budge on any element of her vision of her book.

I greatly enjoyed Saving Mr. Banks.  To be sure, that had much to do with sentimentality on my part as well as unabashed nostalgia on the part of the filmmakers, but the movie has no shortage of actual production merits beyond the mere playing of heartstrings.Acting is top-notch across the board, as is the production design, particularly the recreation of early 1960s Los Angeles.  Being intimately familiar with the Disney Studios lot, Disneyland and many other locations at which the film was both shot and actually supposed to take place, I felt transported back in time in a very real way observing their transformation.

Like any true story adaptation--or book adaptation, as the film itself ostensibly is about--Saving Mr. Banks does take many liberties with the facts.  That the movie all but completely whitewashes Walt Disney’s image of his darker aspects is not surprising considering that Saving Mr. Banks is a Walt Disney Pictures production, but knowing so does not detract from the film’s appreciation.  Somewhat more eyebrow raising--most likely because we know so little about her compared to Walt Disney--is the portrayal of the adult Travers of as a Grade A, raging bitch through most of the film.  This rather odd choice for a non anti-hero protagonist is designed to be mitigated by the flashback story of the sweet young Travers (then Helen Goff) and her father, since their relationship is the real story and heart of the film.  (As an aside, one of the actual tapes recorded during the script meetings is played over the end credits, and while Travers is quite firm about her very-defined views, she is nowhere near as disagreeable.)

The Blu-ray’s 2.35:1 picture is simply gorgeous, lush and crisp.  The filmmakers wisely chose to replicate the filmic appearance of the era not just in an aged tint but by shooting with 35mm, and that look practically pops off screen.  Not being a special effects spectacular, the film’s sound design admittedly does not push the 5.1 DTS Master Audio’s sonic limits, but Saving Mr. Banks’s soundtrack stars, the songs and score, do sound beautiful in the format.

Special features are sadly slim, but at least they exhibit some thought and effort: three deleted scenes, a featurette and a music video.  The deleted scenes have been nicely “finished” through post-production to match the feature and not just raw footage.  The featurette, “The Walt Disney Studios: From Poppins To The Present” follows Saving Mr. Banks director John Lee Hancock around the Disney Studios lot interviewing crew members on their recollections not just of Mary Poppins and Saving Mr. Banks, but of Walt Disney and the studios themselves.  Incorporating archival footage, this mini-docu is well-produced and well worth the watch.  Finally, the music video consists of the Saving Mr. Banks cast and crew singing “Let’s Go Fly A Kite” in tribute to composer Richard Sherman on the last day of filming.  Sherman is obviously quite moved by the experience...as thus will be most viewers.

To sum up Saving Mr. Banks: Nostalgic?  Yes.  Sentimental?  Yes.  A delightful movie?  Definitely.

Fast forward 54 years and and the score still follows her lead, heralding her arrival in Los Angeles with a jaunty offbeat tune, two relentlessly alternating guitar chords hinting at her steely, unstoppable resolve. Later, that softens into a piano melody for Whiskey, a similarly relentless riff – now interrupted by a tune that harks back to the older music.

That carefully orchestrated connection between the past and present is what makes Saving Mr. Banks‘ score such a success. Ray Charles’ One Mint Julep nails the 1960s vibe in 92 seconds alongside a shimmying track from Dave Brubeck’s album Dave Digs Disney – trust me: go listen to it now – Heigh-Ho, which has the added bonus of keeping that Walt vibe going.

In fact, that childlike excitement from Disney’s golden days runs through most of the album. Why? The answer lies in one word: waltz. Richard and Robert Sherman’s flawless songbook for Mary Poppins is full of them, a string of three-step numbers that demand you sway along. Newman’s Saving Mr. Banks adopts the time signature, recalling everyone’s favourite nanny even when we’re far from the Disney studios.

He scatters other references throughout the score too: after the piano intro, the sad moments in Mrs. Travers’ childhood flashbacks (Laying Eggs) are accompanied by strings and chimes picking out a gentle Chim Chim. The main theme, meanwhile, is a subtle inversion of Feed the Birds, borrowing both the tuppence-a-bird rhythm and the 3/4 momentum. Newman has said in interviews he did not set out to make a soundtrack full of quotations, but whether intentional or not, saving mr banks soundtrack spirit of Mary Poppins is woven right into Saving Mr. Banks‘ sweet sound.

Then, in the present day, the film unveils its secret weapon: The Sherman Brothers themselves. Well, B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman. Rather than opt for straight clips from the film, we see Mary Poppins’ songs performed as they are written at the piano, a treat for your ears that makes them feel new all over again. It’s a shame that the single CD soundtrack Disney has released in the UK doesn’t include more of them: Schwartzman’s heartbreaking late night rendition of Feed the Birds is sorely missed. But hearing them bellow “responstible” and “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” is a delight nonetheless.

The biggest joy of all, though, is saved for the film’s emotional climax, when they and Bradley Whitford burst into Let’s Go Fly a Kite. After an album of merging childhood and adulthood, Disney and non-Disney, piano and strings, Emma Thompson joins in with the trio halfway through – backed by a full orchestra. That union of all of the score’s parts pays off with a grin-inducing moment of elation, a dance that will leave you soaring around the room (or the bus, or the office) and yelling “LET’S GO FLY A KITE” for all you’re worth.
