Ear Infections: Best Ways to Treat at Home and Prevent that Earache

Diy home remedy for earache -

Pain in the Ear Earache Remedy

The weather hasn’t turned cold yet here in Ohio, and yet I’m already hearing from mothers who are dealing with ear infections.

I always come across someone who has taken their child to the doctor at least a few times a year with ear issues and they are usually pretty fed up with it. Antibiotics seem like a great option when you are dealing with a screaming child who is pulling on his or her ears, but there is a much better way to help.

Unfortunately, many infections are caused by viral agents for which antibiotics are useless at best and potentially harmful at worst. We have never had to deal with an ear infection in our house, but that doesn’t stop me from being prepared. One of the best home remedies for this issue is mullein (Verbascum thapsus) flower ear oil.

Mullein Oil – A Great Remedy for Earaches

The best thing about this oil is that whether it is a viral or bacterial infection, mullein will help. The additional advantages are that (1) you won’t have the possibility of adding to the antibiotic resistance problem, (2) you’ll avoid a host of side effects, and (3) your children get to keep their gut bacteria.

You can make the oil slowly in the sun over 4-6 weeks, but it always seems to me that this is one of those oils that you never have when you need it… and there just isn’t a handy device to go back in time to start it. In case you’re dealing with some ear issues right about now I thought I would share how to make this oil the quick way!

Don’t want to make your own?

If you can’t (or simply don’t want to) make your own mullein remedy, you can purchase a great natural mullein oil here.

Now, for the recipe…

DIY Mullein Ear Oil for Earaches

Ingredients

  • ½ cup loosely packed fresh mullein flowers
  • 2 cups extra virgin olive oil

Supplies

  • double boiler
  • kitchen strainer lined with 1 piece of paper towel
  • glass dropper bottle (find them here)

Process

  1. Add ingredients to the top of a double boiler and cover with a lid.
  2. Place your double boiler on the stove and bring the bottom pot of water just to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and set a kitchen timer for 40 minutes.
  3. The oil should be kept continuously warm, but should never boil or overheat. This is why it is important to keep an eye on the stove. If your double boiler runs out of water in the lower pot, your oil can easily overheat.
  4. At the end of 40 minutes, turn off the heat and allow your oil to steep for an additional 40 minutes, or until it is completely cool.
  5. Strain the flowers out of the oil through your lined kitchen strainer. Discard or compost flowers.
  6. Pour finished oil into a glass dropper bottle. Your oil is shelf stable and does not require any refrigeration.

How to Use the Oil

  1. Pour a small amount of oil into a saucepan or add it to a bowl and put it in the oven to warm. The oil should be just a bit warmer than room temperature. CAUTION: Be sure to test the temperature of the oil on the sensitive skin inside your elbow or wrist before using this in anyone’s ear.
  2. Add 3-4 drops of the mullein ear oil to BOTH ears, regardless of which ear is affected. Place a cotton ball in the outer ear area and let your loved one rest for as long as possible.
  3. Repeat as needed every 4-5 hours.

Of course, if your child does not show signs of improvement over the next couple of days, it is best to head to the doctor for a thorough examination.

Garlic oil ear drops are simple to make and a great natural ear infection remedy. The following is a simple recipe for how to make garlic oil for ear infections: crush 2-3 cloves of garlic and mix with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Leave the mixture to steep for 30 minutes, and then strain out the garlic. Voila! You’ve made your own garlic ear drops!

How To Make Garlic Oil For Ear Infections

Once strained, put a drop or two in each ear every hour for a few days. Results are typically seen within the first few doses!

Most people who have used this remedy have had great results, often the pain lets up immediately.

Is it dangerous to put garlic oil in your ear? What about botulism?

The short answer is no. Studies show that herbal remedies for ear infections produce better results for earache management than the use of the antibiotic amoxicillin, and should be a go-to (source, PDF file).

It is widely known that garlic is a potent antimicrobial agent. More recent studies confirm that the substances in garlic are potent antifungals and can inhibit the growth of aflatoxins and cure infections when diluted and applied topically (source).

It is best to make a new mixture every 24 hours, to preserve the benefits of the garlic and olive oil and ensure the mixture doesn’t get contaminated by Clostridium botulinum. This bacteria grows best in anaerobic conditions, and typically takes hold after 3 days of storage in the fridge. This is one of the reasons I prefer to make a new batch each day.

What about just putting a whole clove of garlic in my ear?

Many people have benefited from putting a whole clove of garlic in the ear. Some will wrap with wet gauze and warm gently. It can and does work. However, I prefer to use garlic and olive oil for ear infections and earaches. For one, the clove of garlic cannot enter the ear canal (even if it is small enough to fit, do not put it inside your ear canal!!!). Secondly, using garlic oil for ear infections and earaches works much more quickly, is kid-friendly, and allows you to go about your day as you normally would.

Make Your Own Garlic Oil Ear Drops for Earaches

So… Why Should You Make Your Own Garlic Oil?

There are several concoctions of garlic oil available ready-made at the store, some with additional herbs like mullein, lobelia, calendula or St. John’s Wort. These are often heated and may contain additives/preservatives (check labels carefully!).

When you make your own garlic oil, you can ensure that it is never heated. You can also use quality ingredients of your choosing and opt for organic garlic and a reputable brand of extra virgin olive oil.

In case you haven’t heard, there have been reports that some olive oils are tainted with fake fats that may be rancid and definitely not good for your health!

You can also add additional herbs to your garlic oil mixture if you choose to do so, but it is not necessary. In short, making your own allows you to reap all the homemade garlic oil benefits–a pure product that is potent and most importantly, works quickly.

How does olive oil help ear infections?

Olive oil contains fragile polyphenols, which are antioxidants that protect us from cell damage and help control inflammation. When the oil is heated, these polyphenols are greatly reduced, or even eliminated. Olive oil has antibacterial and antiviral properties when raw that directly help attack ear infections. This is why it can be used to avoid using antibiotics and the gut damage that follows.

Olive oil is also mildly acidic and astringent. It greatly helps to soften ear wax which can contribute to ear pain.

In addition to these benefits, olive oil lowers the risk of cancer, arthritis, diabetes, depression and other diseases. It also helps to lower blood pressure. It is a great cooking oil to use for salads, sauces, sandwiches, etc.

When you use olive oil for ear infections, these properties help to control inflammation (which can lead to earache pain) and fight the infection.

How can garlic help with ear infections?

Garlic shares many of the benefits that olive oil offers, including being full of antioxidants. It is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and helps protect against cancer.

This member of the allium family is high in sulfur compounds which aid the body in detoxification. It even helps our bodies to avoid forming carcinogens from overcooked meat! Garlic helps with iron absorption and is a good source of Vitamin C, manganese, selenium, and other important vitamins and minerals.

These are only some of the wonderful benefits that garlic has to offer, and unfortunately many of them are quickly destroyed by heat. For this reason it is often recommended to add garlic when a dish is done, or very close to being done. This way you can take advantage of all the health benefits it has to offer.

Garlic is important for ear infection remedies because it is potent and helps stop ear infections and the associated pain fast.

DIY Garlic Oil For Ear Infections

Raw, Garlic-Infused Olive Oil Works Miracles

When combined together and kept in their raw state, garlic and extra virgin olive oil offer the best of both worlds. Additional herbs can be steeped with the mixture.

I have many friends who have had success with this remedy, including my neighbor who was a skeptic. Making a new solution daily is advised because after a period of time, garlic submerged in olive oil may encourage botulism to grow.

Administering frequently ensures that the properties of the oil are available to continue healing the infection at all times. Many people get away with dosing every 4-6 hours, though.

Can I substitute another type of oil?

I highly recommend using extra virgin olive oil because of the properties it has inherently. However, you can also make garlic oil for ear infections with a good quality sesame oil or coconut oil.

I would not use vegetable oils such as canola, corn, rapeseed, etc to make this garlic oil remedy. These vegetable oils can cause or worsen inflammation. I would personally choose the coconut oil for ear infection relief if I could not access olive oil.

How do I apply garlic olive oil ear drops home remedy?

Here’s how to apply garlic olive oil ear drops.

You can use a dropper or syringe if you have one, and put a drop or two in each ear.

If you do not have a dropper, you can use a spoon, just use a small amount.

IMPORTANT NOTES:It is important to move the mixture to the refrigerator and replace at most every 2 days to avoid bacterial growth in the garlic oil. I prefer to make a new mixture each day as it will also be more potent! You can warm the garlic oil gently as you would warm breast milk, by putting into a bowl or other container of lukewarm water for a couple minutes. Body temperature is the goal, just for comfort.

A Note On Ear Infections

Recurring ear infections should not be a normal part of childhood! It often signifies that something is wrong. Dietary intervention may be necessary, and sometimes just eliminating dairy makes a huge difference. For more information, read this related post for how to stop recurring ear infections naturally.

Adding fermented foods such as sauerkraut and fermented daikon can also be very helpful. Including more garlic in the diet can lead to a stronger immune system and therefore less infections as well.

I used to get ear infections pretty often as a kid. So much so that the doctor recommended putting tubes in my ears. Thank goodness my parents didn’t let him because as coincidence would have it, I stopped getting ear infections shortly afterwards. While ear tubes are not recommend much anymore (some research has shown they could pose more risk than harm) kids still do get ear infections just as often as they did 20 years ago. And as any parent will attest to, it’s disheartening to watch a little one suffer from an ear infection.

As some of us can relate to, most physicians will head straight for the prescription pad when your child is diagnosed with an ear infection. Unfortunately, antibiotics cause an array of long and short term complications to our health. So, most of us #LifeFromScratch mommies try to steer clear of them as much as possible.

Thankfully, there are still many remedies in grandma’s medicine cabinet that actually do work.

From castor oil compresses to arnica for bruising; herbs, oils, and holistic remedies are very powerful indeed. Plus with the growing field of naturopathic medicine there are even studies to prove the effects of many of these remedies! One of these treatments from grandma’s stockpile is garlic oil for ear infections and ear aches. It is very easy to make, uses ingredients we all have on hand, and is quite effective.

Garlic is a superstar in this ear oil.

When used holistically it has antibacterial, antiviral, immune enhancing, anti-fungal, blood thinning, and cholesterol lowering effects. The most powerful of the components responsible for the amazing properties is allicin, (source). However, the catch is the stability of allicin is quite poor (source), so there is some question as to how well long this mixture lasts.

Allicin starts to degrade within 30 minutes  of the garlic being crushed or chopped. And how quickly it degrades varies greatly depending on multiple factors, which are much to difficult to control in a home.

This means that even day old garlic oil is not nearly as potent as freshly made.

For me I want the most effective oil to be used, so I choose to make this fresh each time I need it. The remaining oil can be saved for cooking or salad dressing or what have you. However, this is really personal preference as I do know some who keep this oil for months in their medicine cabinet.

DIY Garlic Oil - Home Remedy for Ear Infections

Author: Jena Halman-Kincaid

  1. In a small sauce pan over low heat, warm the olive oil. Make sure to not get the oil too hot that it smokes or even so hot that it will sauté the garlic.
  2. When the oil is WARM add the minced garlic and swirl in the pan. The moment the garlic becomes fragrant remove it from the heat, you’re not actually trying to cook the garlic just heat it to the point it releases its germ fighting compounds. If you get it too hot the allicin degrades much faster.
  3. Place in a small glass container and let cool to a temperature tolerable for use.
  4. Strain the mixture.
  5. Store in a dark colored glass bottle with a dropper.
  1. Apply 1-2 drops inside each ear canal as well as rub another drop or so on the external entrance. You can also rub some behind the ear in the area where the lobe connects to the head. In most people there should be a small indentation here to make it easy to identify.
  2. To help keep the oil in the ear you may need to use a little cotton at the entrance of the ear. Or try placing one drop on the cotton in addition to in the canal and keeping it in the ear overnight.
  3. To really boost the healing process, place a hot damp washcloth over the ear for about 20 minutes while the garlic oil is instilled. The damp heat expands the blood vessels so blood, and the germ fighting white blood cells, rush to the area to speed up healing.
  4. The oil should help soothe pain and fight of the bacteria which are causing the infection. Use as often as needed when pain returns.

Safety note: This should never be given if an ear drum is ruptured or if the child does have tubes in his or her ears.

Salt is most likely in your kitchen but it might not be in your medicine cabinet. Yet, most of us are familiar with how well salt works as a home remedy. For generations, a saltwater gargle has been a trusted home remedy for a sore throat. It’s an effective natural remedy for many common ailments because of its antibacterial and healing properties. In fact, one natural, effective way to relieve an earache is with a warm salt sock.

During cold and flu season, earaches and ear infections can make the patient miserable. This natural DIY treatment creates a shift in the pressure within the ear, draws fluid out, and eases the pain. It’s easy to make—only 2 materials needed—and it’s one of the best natural home remedies out there!

DIY Salt Sock For Earache Pain

Materials:
1 clean, all-white*, 100% cotton sock
1–1.5 cups of coarse sea salt.

Directions:

Pour the sea salt into the sock and tie a knot at the end. Heat in a clean, dry
skillet, over medium-low heat for about 4-6 minutes. To heat the sock evenly, shake it around, and flip every 30-60 seconds. Heat until very warm, but not
burning to the touch—you don’t want to burn your patient! Test on your hand before applying to the ear. Place the warm salt sock over the ear, and the area behind your jaw bone and relax.

*Important: Only use a white sock as dyed threads may melt when heated. Do not substitute regular table salt for the sea salt. Never microwave the salt sock.

Ear infections are reported more amongst children than in adults. There are various causes for an infection – viral or bacterial infection, wax build-up, moisture build-up, allergies, and even yeast infections (1). What did our ancestors do to treat ailments like this? Yes, you guessed it. They depended on nature’s many bounties to cure specific diseases and ailments.

So, are natural and home remedies for ear infections safe? Yes, they are certainly safe, effective, and most importantly, have minimal or no side effects at all. So, the next time your ear hurts, or your tiny tot complains of an earache and you do not know what to do, try a few natural remedies that are sure to alleviate the pain and cure the infection naturally.

Note: We’re talking about mild to moderate symptoms that you can treat at home – and hopefully prevent things from getting worse. The warning signs that will bring you to your doctor are a high fever, obvious pain, and crying.

Let’s take a look at the signs and symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms Of Ear Infection

When suffering from an ear infection, people can experience the following:

Subscribe

  • Earache
  • Feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Feeling dull and ill
  • Vomiting (rarely)
  • Diarrhea (rarely)

It is obviously easier for adults to express the problem if they have an ear infection. But, when it comes to infants, toddlers, and children, it can be tricky to find out that it is actually an ear infection that is troubling them. Infants usually start acting irritable or keep crying no matter what you do to calm them. They might also find it difficult to fall asleep. This difficulty in sleeping is also seen in toddlers and small children (1).

An ear infection can occur in any part of the ear.

a) Outer Ear Infection – also called swimmer’s ear or otitis externa, it involves infection in the outer ear and ear canal (2).

b) Middle Ear Infection – also called otitis media, the middle part of the ear that is located behind the eardrum is infected. The infection is usually accompanied by swelling and pain (2).

c) Inner Ear Infection – the fluid in the ear canal may travel to the inner ear and cause an infection. The symptoms of this are slightly different from the other ear infections as this part of the ear is responsible for maintaining the body’s balance (3). You may experience dizziness, vertigo, difficulty in balance, and problems with vision and hearing with this type of infection (4).

The following are natural remedies for ear infections that can help reduce the swelling and pain without having to swallow painkillers.

Caution

Never pour any liquid into your ear if you suspect a ruptured eardrum. Pouring any oil or liquid will only worsen the condition. An indication of a ruptured eardrum is a cessation of pain after a period of intense pain and liquid seeping from the ear canal.

Seeing your child writhing in pain can be heart wrenching. But, do not despair. In most cases, ear infection or earache is a manifestation of the wax in the ears blocking the Eustachian tubes and allowing an infection to take root. This blockage can be easily cleared with sweet oil. The oil will soften the wax or debris hardened in the ear, which can then be cleared by using a sterilized cotton tipped swab or a warm water ear syringe (8).

Note: Never insert a cotton swab fully into the ear because you can puncture the eardrum. Only use it to clean the part of the outer ear canal that you can see.

Earache is a common cause of pain and discomfort to everybody. In children, it becomes a bigger cause of worry as the child may be too small to tell the reason for the pain. Therefore, it is up to the immediate caretaker to see how the pain can be alleviated. There are many reasons for earaches, such as infection, perforated eardrum, and boils. It is important to identify the cause of the earache to find a suitable remedy for the same.

Natural Remedies for Earache in Kids

If a child is constantly crying, looks restless, or keeps moving his ears away from you, he could be having an ear infection.

The following are simple home remedies for ear pain in kids.

1. Warm Compress: Use a warm towel compress to reduce pain around the ear and neck area. You can warm up a towel by pressing it on a hot griddle or on a warm iron. Heating pads or a small plastic bottle filled with warm water can also be used. There can be a lot of squirming involved as your child can find it uncomfortable. Do not get angry or irritated with this but try to talk him into it firmly to put the child at ease.

2. Cold Compress: If the warm compress is not helping, use a cold compress instead. Be cautious and avoid putting the ice directly on the skin of your child, as it can stop the blood flow. Ice can be put in a waterproof bag or wrapped in a towel. A frozen packet of milk is also good for this purpose. If you ran out of ice, fill cold water in a small plastic bottle and ease the pain of your child.

3. Basil Leaves: It is essential to keep this simple and inexpensive remedy always handy. Basil is known for its unequivocal medicinal properties. Crush the basil leaves; extract its juice and put a few drops in the ear.

4. Olive Oil: Olive oil is one of the most effective natural remedies to treat an ear infection in children. Heat a small quantity of olive oil in a clean pan or microwave till it reaches body temperature. Apply the oil lightly around and inside the affected ear with a clean earbud. Make sure that you use towels to avoid any stray drops of oil from staining the surrounding area.

5. Garlic: Crush a couple of garlic cloves and heat it with some sesame/olive oil. Strain using a clean cloth and apply this garlic oil in and around the affected ear.

6. Eucalyptus Oil and Medicated Cotton Balls: Pour a few drops of diluted eucalyptus oil on a cotton ball and dab it on the infected ear to relieve pain. Repeat this process every day until the pain subsides.

7. Mustard Oil: In most cases, the ear naturally expels excess earwax to avoid a build-up. However, when this doesn’t happen, it can lead to hardening of the earwax. This can cause a blockage and lead to an infection. Put a few drops of warm mustard oil in the infected ear to reduce the blockage; continue this process for a weak. Some of the softer wax will come out by itself, and some more oil can be used for removing the rest of the wax. Mustard oil cleans the infected area by removing wax and small foreign objects. You can use a flashlight to inspect the ear and see if it has cleared up. Below are the steps you can follow to remove earwax:

  • Pour a capful into the affected ear
  • Wait for a few minutes
  • Cover your ear with a tissue
  • Tilt the head to remove the fluid

8. Eucalyptus Oil Massage: Never use eucalyptus oil in its original form as it is strong and pungent. Dilute it with coconut oil, sesame oil, or olive oil. Warm it slightly using a clean utensil or microwave it. Massage the area around the ear and neck in a downward movement, reheating whenever the oil becomes cold.

9. Breast Milk: This is a good option for lactating mothers. Put a few drops of fresh breast milk into the infected ear. It is a well-known remedy for treating ear infections in infants as it contains antibodies. Caution should be taken as to not infect the milk by taking it in a dirty container. Also, it should not be administered directly from the breast as the pressure will be too much to take for an infant’s ear. The best approach is to collect the breast milk in a clean container and use ear droppers.

10. Salt: You can use coarse salt as a home remedy for treating an ear infection in kids. Microwave a cup of coarse salt for a minute. Mix it and reheat for another minute. This can be put in a cotton sock and tied on the open end. Put it over the infected ear for 10 minutes and repeat if needed.

Coarse salt

11. Onions: Keep the infected ear in an elevated position to reduce the rush of blood. Chop a small onion or a shallot, heat it over a low flame to soften it, and extract its juice. Put a few drops into the ear. Its anti-bacterial quality will help fight the infection and reduce the pain.

12. Tea Tree Oil  Tea tree oil is also used for the treatment of an earache in kids. MIx a few drops of diluted tea tree oil with olive oil; warm it till it is at body temperature. Use a clean dropper to put a few drops in each ear. Be gentle and do not use force as the ear is a sensitive organ.

Earache is usually a symptom rather than a malady. Cold, flu, and congestion are the main causes for this pain in children. These are simple home remedies for quick relief, but it is important to identify the cause. The mentioned remedies work well and can also offer instant relief.

However, not all earaches can be solved through home remedies. Issues such as a perforated ear and extensive infection can permanently damage hearing. This is why you should take your child to a paediatrician if the pain is unbearable or continues for more than a week.

If you have a pierced ear infection, don't panic! Here's what to do

Raise your hand if you remember going to Claire’s to get your ears pierced for the first time. This adolescent rite of passage was pretty darn exhilarating — until it inevitably resulted in your first earring hole infection.

Although you’re older and wiser now, you’re definitely not immune to the occasional pierced ear infection. But you can avoid them with the help of a few simple tricks. We spoke to experts to understand everything from the warning signs and causes of an earring hole infection to dissecting the various at-home treatments available.

What you need to know about pierced ear infections

Preventing earring hole infections all starts with proper hygiene — both right after a piercing, and for years to come. If you recently got a piercing, make sure to wash hands thoroughly before touching the piercings to avoid exposing the area to any unwanted bacteria.

“Piercings should also be soaked twice a day for two to five minutes with a saline or salt solution. A soaked, clean gauze can be used to gently clean the area,” said cosmetic dermatologist Sejal Shah, founder of SmarterSkin Dermatology in New York City.

If your piercing is fully healed, make sure to clean both the earrings and piercing site whenever you remove your jewelry. Keep earrings clean by wiping them down with an antiseptic cleanser (such as alcohol), Purell, soap and water or even mouthwash in a pinch. And do so often (at least once a week) because buildup of any sort in your earrings can spell trouble.

“Dead skin can build up around the backing as a result of dandruff or infrequent removal and serve as a nidus for germs,” said Dr. Francesca Fusco of Wexler Dermatology in New York City.

What are ear infection symptoms?

If you’ve never had an earring hole infection before, you may not be familiar with the warning signs and symptoms, but they’re pretty straightforward. Warm, itchy, tender ears are a telltale sign of an infection, and your ears will also likely look red and a bit swollen.

Think of the “four Ps:” pain, pus, plumpness and (deep) pinkness

“This usually would be accompanied by some sort of cut or scab on the ear, but not always,” said Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital's department of dermatology.

Some earring hole infections may also be accompanied by an oozy discharge, but not all ear discharge is cause for alarm. In fact, ears sometimes secrete a white to yellow thin liquid while healing from a piercing, and sebum from your oil glands can also collect on your piercings. “If your discharge is light in color and not accompanied by pain, redness, warmth or swelling, it is probably not infected,” Shah said.

An easy way to self-diagnose your infection? Fusco encourages patients to think of "the four Ps": pain, pus, plumpness and (deep) pinkness. “All indicate possible infection,” she said.

The good news? Minor earring hole infections will typically only last a few days, and you can usually nip them in the bud with a few home remedies. If your situation doesn’t improve in a few days, though, you may need to diy home remedy for earache in backup. “Untreated infection could lead to more complicated infections that require drainage and oral antibiotics,” Fusco said.

What causes a pierced ear infection?

Whether you just got your ears pierced or are a piercing veteran, there are a number of reasons you might end up with an earring hole infection. Fresh piercings, especially, are pretty vulnerable, and can actually take up to six weeks to heal. “An earlobe piercing is essentially an open wound until it fully heals, so during this time, like any other wound, it is susceptible to infection,” Shah said.

That means simple acts like handling your earrings with dirty hands or forgetting to clean them can accidentally introduce unwanted bacteria into your earring hole. “When bacteria gets trapped in the piercing hole, it can have a hard time finding its way out. It can then multiply and create an infection,” said dermatologist Marina Peredo.

Once what is gdp per capita piercing heals fully, it’s less likely to get infected, but that doesn’t mean you’re totally in the clear. You still need to clean your earrings frequently to prevent an infection.

“Earrings can accumulate buildup from soap and shampoo, and sometimes hair products. It’s a good idea to clean your earrings once a week,” Peredo said.

Taking your earrings out every night will give your ears a much-needed break, and you should also sanitize them before sharing them with friends or before trying on a new pair at the mall.

If you take good care of your earrings but still end up with an earring hole infection, the type of earrings you’re wearing could be to blame.

“Allergic reactions to jewelry are generally due to metal allergies, most commonly nickel but also cobalt and gold,” Shah said. “It can be very difficult to determine whether a piece of jewelry contains nickel just by looking at it. One should assume all-metal jewelry has some amount of nickel unless it is made of stainless (surgical) steel or pure platinum.” Sterling silver and 24-karat gold are usually safe bets, too.

Costume jewelry, in particular, can www bbt com association payments problematic for certain women. “The metal used in costume (jewelry) is more reactive than precious metals and more likely to cause irritations to the earhole,” said Elizabeth Doyle, co-founder of jewelry brand Doyle & Doyle.

How to treat an infected ear piercing: Over-the-counter and DIY remedies

You don’t necessarily have to run to the doctor at the first signs of an ear infection. In fact, there are several do-it-yourself treatments you can explore to help treat it before seeking additional assistance. Take dandruff shampoo, for instance.

“The zinc pyrithione in dandruff shampoo is known to treat dandruff but also has antibacterial properties that can aid in the healing process of infected ears or work to prevent infection,” Fusco said.

If your ear irritation seems more like an allergic reaction than a full-blown infection, Shah suggests removing the earring, then using a gentle cleanser to cleanse the ear twice a day. You can also try applying an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream and a healing ointment such as Aquaphor or Cicalfate.

With blatant infections, cleaning the infected area with a saltwater rinse (after washing your hands, of course!) and steering clear of certain irritants can also help cure it. “Avoid alcohol and hydrogen peroxide as these can potentially irritate the areas. Dry the piercing on both sides with a paper towel. If the infection is improving, continue this until fully cleared,” Shah said.

If the infected area is oozing, try placing a towel on your pillowcase and changing it daily. Then once it subsides, apply an antibacterial cream to the earring post before inserting it.

“I advise trying home treatments for about a week. If home treatments are not working or the area is worsening, it's best to seek medical care immediately,” Shah said.

Most dermatologists will suggest a prescription-strength antibacterial cream like Biafine or mupirocin, and if the hole is very oozy with pus, some may even culture the infection to identify whether it’s bacteria or yeast.

The good news? Icici bank ltd share price hole infections aren’t the worst thing that can happen to you, and as long as you treat your ears — and earrings — with care, you can make sure you never deal with a pierced ear infection again!

Are you struggling with symptoms of an ear infection and wondering how to cure an ear infection fast? Ear infections, whether they afflict adults or more commonly children, can be really unpleasant and outright painful.

Ear infections can be in the outer, middle or inner ear. For this article, I’m going to focus on the most common type of ear infection, which is an infection of the middle ear.

According to the CDC, middle ear infections, “may not need antibiotics in many cases because the body’s immune system can fight off the infection without help from antibiotics” and a mild case “often will get better on its own without antibiotic treatment, so your health care professional may recommend watchful waiting before prescribing antibiotics to you or your loved one.” (1)

So even conventional medicine agrees that antibiotics are often not the way to go, which means it’s time to talk about natural ear infection treatment and ear infection pain relief.

What Is An Ear Infection?

An ear infection of the middle ear, medically known as acute otitis media, can be caused by a bacteria or virus. Most often, ear infections occur in the middle ear, which is the air-filled space between the eardrum and the oval window of the ear. The middle ear is responsible for transmitting sound from the outer ear to the inner ear.

In addition to a middle ear infection, it’s also possible to have an outer ear infection like swimmer’s ear or an inner ear infection. Labyrinthitis is a serious inner ear infection that affects hearing and balance. People with labyrinthitis often experience vertigo and some hearing loss. (2)

If a middle ear infection is bacterial, it’s most likely the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae causing the infection. A virus can cause also cause ear infections. (3) A a cold or allergies can cause congestion that blocks the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. This congestion can lead to a buildup of fluid and pressure and provides an environment for bacteria or viruses that have traveled up the Eustachian tube into the middle ear to flourish, resulting in an ear infection. (4)

What are some common ear infection symptoms? When you have a middle ear infection, there is a good deal of inflammation and fluid buildup going on inside of your ear. This leads to the most prevalent symptom of pain otherwise known as an earache. It can also cause a temporary decrease in hearing ability. The pain or earache is usually worse when lying down. It’s also possible to have a fever. (5)

When it comes to risk factors for ear infections, children experience ear infections more than adults, especially kids between the ages of 6 months and 2 years old because of the size and shape of their Eustachian tubes and their underdeveloped immune systems. Babies that bottle fed, especially while lying down, are more prone to infections than breast-fed babies.

Even the CDC recommends breast-feeding children exclusively for the first six months of their lives and continuing until they are at least 1 year old. Injury to the ear, climate changes, altitude changes, pacifier use, family history of ear infections, and exposure to cigarette smoke are other risk factors. (6, 7, 8)

7 Natural Ear Infection Remedies

What do you do for an ear infection? If you’re wondering, how can I treat an ear infection at home, then you’ve come to the right place. As experts will confirm, an ear infection with a viral cause should not be treated with antibiotics and that’s when these natural yet highly effective middle ear infection treatments can really come in handy. These are helpful natural ear infection remedies for adults and kids.

1. Garlic Oil

There’s a good reason why garlic ear oil is likely on the shelf of your local health store. Multiple studies have demonstrated garlic’s potent antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It’s also been shown to have a highly positive effect on immune health. (9, 10) As “nature’s antibiotic,” garlic oil can help get to the root of an ear infection and kill off the offending pathogens.

If you bring your child to the doctor for an ear infection, you may want to question the recommendation of antibiotics. In the U.S., it’s estimated that 80 percent of children will have an ear infection by time they are three years old and pediatric ear infections are the top condition for which doctors prescribe antibiotics.

First off, antibiotics should only be prescribed when the ear infection has a bacterial cause. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends a wait-and-watch or watchful waiting period in low-risk kids rather than jumping to prescribing antibiotics right away. Many are the banks open today on columbus day will wait 24 to 72 hours to see if symptoms improve which they often do. (11)

In addition, antibiotics can cause allergies in children. The overprescribing of antibiotics is exactly why bacterial ear infections have become antibiotic-resistantand much more difficult to treat. (12)

2. Probiotics

Probiotics often are included on lists of of complementary and alternative medicine that have been shown to be effective in cases of pediatric ear infections. (13) Having an ear infection means you want to do all you can to boost your immune system. One of the best ways to do this is with the help of probiotics, which are available as a supplement and can also be acquired through your diet by eating things like kimchi, kombucha, coconut kefir and other probiotic-rich fermented foods.

Probiotics can also help to prevent ear infections from occurring in the first place. According to Mayo Clinic, “Certain strains of these ‘good’ bacteria, which occur naturally in the body, may help prevent ear infections in infants and children.” (14)

3. Chiropractic Care

One of the many benefits of chiropractic adjustments is their ability to help improve ear infections. The spine can misalign in the upper neck and that can actually affect the way the body heals. As a result, those nerve signals getting from the brain to that area are affected as well, and it affects the overall healing.

A pilot study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics looked at 332 children ranging in age from only 27 days old to 5 years old and the effects of a series of four to six chiropractic adjustments. Some of the children had an acute case while others had chronic ear infections. Overall, the results revealed a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections in children. (15)

Another study published in the Journal of Diy home remedy for earache and Physiological Therapeutics looked at 46 children 5 years old or younger and the effects of chiropractic care on ear infection symptoms. The typical treatment regimen was three treatments per week for one week, then two treatments per week for one week, then one treatment per week. This study was a limited cohort nonrandomized retrospective study, but its results were interesting: 93 percent of all episodes improved with 75 percent improving in 10 days or fewer and 43 percent with only one or two treatments. (16)

When an ear infection is present, fluid is getting trapped in the middle ear cavity, which then creates an environment for viruses and bacteria to flourish. The idea behind chiropractic care for ear infections is that spinal manipulation, especially of the cervical vertebrae, can help to relax the muscles surrounding the Eustachian tubes allowing for proper drainage. Chiropractic care also aims to restore the natural function of the nervous system, which can benefit the health of the entire body.

4. Nail Down the Root Cause (Allergies)

One of the underlying causes of ear infections can be food allergies. According to researchers, children with food allergies are more likely to develop ear infections. The study first published in 2004 actually found that almost half of the children with a middle ear infection with fluid accumulation had some sort of food allergy. (17)

If your child is allergic to gluten, dairy, nuts or some other food they are eating regularly, then this can be contributing to their development of ear infections. If you or your child suffer from chronic ear infections, it’s a worthwhile investment to get an IgG food sensitivity test that can show you any food allergies, food sensitivities or food intolerances. In general, I recommend avoiding conventional cow’s milk. You can replace cow’s milk products with goat milk, goat milk yogurt and goat cheese.

5. Mullein

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a plant, and oil made from its flowers is well-known for being one of the best natural earache remedies. A tincture containing mullein either alone or combined with other herbs is commonly found online and in health stores as a natural remedy for earaches and ear infections.

Research published in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine demonstrates how an herbal ear drop containing mullein was just as effective when it came to pain relief as an anesthetic one. (18) Mullein oil is also used to naturally treat ear infections (and more) in dogs too! (19)

6. Heat and Rest

Don’t underestimate the healing help of resting. When your body (or your child’s body) is trying to fight off an ear infection, getting rest and eating a healthy diet are crucial.

Applying heat to the ear can also help with pain. You can use a warm washcloth, but make sure it’s not too hot and it’s wrung out well. (20)

7. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is known for its ability to boost immune health, and research has specifically shown how it can help when it comes to ear infections. A case-control study published in the Norwegian journal Acta Paediatrica in 2017 found that the risk of chronic otitis media with effusion can be decreased by increasing serum levels of vitamin D through increased sun exposure, higher dietary intake of vitamin D as well as vitamin D supplementation. (21)

Conventional Treatment

Many doctors unsure of whether the infection is viral or bacterial will prescribe antibiotics, most commonly Amoxicillin, a penicillin antibiotic. A typical course of treatment for children under the age of 6, and for those with a severe middle ear infection, is 10 days. For children 6 years or older, or for those with mild-to-moderate infection, it’s usually five to seven days. However, “most children with uncomplicated acute [middle ear infection] will recover fully without antibiotic therapy.” (22)

And again, if a virus is at the root of an ear infection, then antibiotics will not help and should not be prescribed. (23)

Some will wrap with wet gauze 5 4 3 2 1 healthy lifestyle warm gently.

Here’s how to apply garlic olive diy home remedy for earache ear drops.

You can use a dropper or syringe if you have one, and put a drop or two in each ear.
